Ken Steele is a health care industry professional with a record of financial success in a complex marketplace. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ken Steele went on to earn a Master's degree in Hospital and Health Services Administration, also from Ohio State.
Ken Steele began his career in health care administration when he joined the Hospital Corporation of America as Assistant Administrator at Encino Hospital Medical Center in California. Four years later, Ken Steele was promoted to Associate Administrator at Encino Hospital, a role he held until 1987. Following his time with Hospital Corporation of America, Ken Steele moved on to Marian Medical Center, where he was Vice President of Professional Services from 1987 to 1994, then Vice President of Managed Care from 1994 to 1996.
In 1996, Ken Steele took a new position with Catholic Healthcare West in San Francisco as Regional Director of Managed Care for the West Bay region. In this role, Ken Steele was responsible for managed care operations in five acute care hospitals located in San Francisco and the surrounding areas. During this time, Ken Steele negotiated a $6 million improvement in contracts with Aetna Inc. for Seton Medical Center and Sequoia Hospital.
Ken Steele's success at Catholic Healthcare West led to his promotion to Vice President of Managed Care for the San Francisco Bay Area in 1998. This promotion expanded Ken Steele's responsibilities to include seven hospitals in San Francisco, Daly City, Redwood City, San Jose, and Morgan Hill. As Vice President of Managed Care, Ken Steele negotiated HMO and PPO contracts to improve hospital revenue by over $10 million.
In 2001, Ken Steele accepted the position of President of San Francisco's well known St. Mary's Medical Center, a 403-bed hospital with annual revenues of more than $140 million. As President of St. Mary's Medical Center, Ken Steele orchestrated a $21 million financial turnaround and increased outpatient service revenue from from 17% of total hospital revenue to 30%. In his seven years at St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco, Ken Steele also established a Community Board of Directors and implemented a strategic planning process for the hospital.
Currently, Ken Steele is the Vice President of Managed Care at Catholic Healthcare West in San Francisco, with responsibility for more than $1 billion in revenue. In this role, Ken Steele is the corporate lead in contract negotiations with organizations including Aetna Inc., Blue Shield of California, and Health Net. In addition, Ken Steele negotiates on behalf of Catholic Healthcare West with independent practice associations, medical groups, Medi-Cal health plans, Medicare Advantage Plans, and local governmental agencies. Ken Steele lives in San Francisco, California, with his wife and two sons.
